Lots of people have different opinions on this one. At Jefferson Elementary School, we feel it is important for students to be able to read and write in cursive. And so in 3rd grade we introduce them to the art of "fancy handwriting" using the Handwriting Without Tears workbooks. Students will get about 20 minutes a week to learn and practice. They are encouraged to do their journal writing and reading responses in cursive once they feel comfortable doing so.
Typing is ABSOLUTELY necessary in our world of electronic devices. It is also enormously helpful to students when it comes time to participate in our standardized tests in the Spring. Each student will practice on Typing.com every week. Their log in information will also be sent home. The more they can practice - even on the typing.com GAMES!! - the faster they will learn, and the more prepared they will be for their SBAC tests.
